Ways to Detox the Body

Detoxification is the process of removing toxins from the body and its organs, according to the Wellness website. The human body is constantly picking up toxins from foods, beverages and the environment. These toxins, if allowed to build up in the body, can cause a wide range of health problems as well as make you feel fatigued and lethargic. Practicing periodic detoxification can keep the body properly cleansed and working to its full potential.

Perspiration

One natural, healthy method to removing toxins from the body is perspiration. According to "Herbal Medicine" by Dian Dincin Buchman, perspiration is the fastest and most effective way to detoxify the body. This method of detoxification utilizes the body's largest organ, the skin, to remove harmful toxins. Use of a sauna or steam room promotes perspiration, thus cleansing the body. Perspiration can also be brought on by exercise; hydrotherapy, which is the use of hot water; or the use of sweat-inducing herbs such as yarrow, chamomile and hyssop.

Herbal Teas

Use of herbal teas is another method to detoxify the body. Certain herbs are effective in working with the liver and the kidneys to promote function and remove toxins from the body. According to Buchman, tea made from clover blossoms, cinnamon sticks and organic orange rind is effective in cleansing the body. Dandelion is another popular herb used for detoxifying the body. According to "Prescription for Nutritional Healing" by Dr. James F. Balch and Phyllis A. Balch, dandelion promotes the production of bile and cleanses the liver and the bloodstream. Dandelion tea can be purchased at most supermarkets and is safe to be consumed on a daily basis. Drinking plenty of water is also essential when using herbal teas for detoxification.

Fasting

Another method for detoxification of the body is fasting. According to Wellness, the process of fasting forces the body to use excess fat, muscle fibers, digestive enzymes and other types of unneeded tissue as its primary source of energy. This process aids the body in expelling fat-soluble toxins. According to James F. Balch, fasting also promotes the body's healing process and can lead to an overall healthier and longer life. The fasting process can be started by eating only raw fruits and vegetables for two days before reducing to a strict fast of at least eight 8-oz. glasses of steam-distilled water per day and non-sweetened, water-diluted juices. Orange and tomato juices should be avoided during the fasting process. Lemon, carrot, apple, grape or any juices made from green, leafy vegetables are among the best juices to use during fasting. Herbal teas can also be used during the fasting process, but should only be consumed one to two times daily. Balch recommends fasting at least three days each month and completing a 10-day fast twice a year.
