According to the Mayo Clinic, a dust mite allergy occurs when the immune system reacts to a protein found in dust mite byproducts. Dust mites are tiny insects that typically colonize warm and moist environments such as carpet, bedding and other upholstered items. Many of the symptoms of a dust mite allergy are similar to other allergic reactions, and testing may be needed to determine the symptoms' cause. The most common dust mite allergy symptoms are nasal irritation, eye irritation, sleeplessness and asthma.

Nasal Irritation

Nasal irritation is a common symptom of a dust mite allergy, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. This can include, but is not limited to, a runny nose, stuffy nose, postnasal drip, sneezing and an itchy nose. A runny nose from a dust mite allergy will appear to be thin and clear in color. A stuffy nose may result from the sinus cavity becoming irritated from the allergen, leading to nasal congestion. Postnasal drip is a condition common with most allergies, where excess mucus drips in the back of the throat which can lead to a cough and sore throat. Nasal irritation from a dust mite allergy may also cause excessive sneezing bouts and an itchy nose.

Eye Irritation

A dust mite allergy can cause itchy, watery and inflamed eyes. In mild cases, the eyes will become slightly irritated, resulting in an itch that can be easily treated with over-the-counter (OTC) eye drops. In more severe cases, the area surrounding the eyes may swell and darken. If mucus is present in the eyes or vision is impaired, consult a doctor to ensure there isn't a more serious condition present.

Sleeplessness

A dust mite allergy may cause a person to have trouble sleeping, especially if the dust mites are in bedding and pillows. Remove all bedding and wash in hot soapy water. Place dust mite covers on the pillows and mattress to prevent dust mites from colonizing in the bedding.

Asthma

Asthma sufferers may experience trouble breathing due to an allergy to dust mites, exhibiting such symptoms as chest tightness, wheezing and shortness of breath. Consult a doctor if you feel lightheaded, dizzy or faint.
