Red wine is not only a tasty beverage to have with a meal, but there can also be some health benefits to consuming red wine in moderation. Researchers studied the population of France, where red wine is a staple of most meals as is food high in saturated fats, and found lower than normal occurrence of heart disease despite the high fat intake. After conducting numerous studies, these researchers found a possible causal link between red wine consumption and lowering the risk of heart disease. While there is sufficient evidence to suggest the likelihood of these health benefits, there still needs to be more study to prove the benefits conclusively.

2. Antioxidants

One ingredient that makes red wine a possible heart healthy beverage is the antioxidants it contains. These antioxidants fight unstable molecules in the blood called free radicals which damage your cells. Antioxidants protect the blood vessels from the development of plaque, which can cause atherosclerosis. To accomplish this protection, the antioxidants make a sacrifice and take the place of healthy tissue and cells that would otherwise suffer damage at the hands of the free radicals. In other words, antioxidants are the bodyguards of the blood vessels, cells and tissues.

3. Chocolate and Red Wine

Red wine also contains polyphenol which is a class of compounds that also occur is chocolate, tea and fruit. This class of compounds has the associated affects on the body of lowering the chances of blood clots, increasing the unimpeded flow of blood in the vessels, and encouraging cholesterol metabolism.

4. Alcohol Abuse

While there are numerous studies that show the health benefits of red wine, no one that has possible alcohol consumption control issues should drink red wine for the health benefits if it leads to furtherance of an addiction. An alcohol addiction is far more damaging than any of the benefits red wine can offer.

According to research at the University of California, Cabernet Sauvignon is the healthiest of red wines followed by the Petit Syrah and Pinot Noir wines. The recommended daily serving of red wine for men is 8 ounces per day and 4 ounces per day for women.
