Ayurveda is a holistic approach to a balanced, healthy life that has been practiced in India for nearly 5,000 years. The practice combines exercise, lifestyle choices and herbal supplements to promote the health of its practitioners. Women can take Ayurvedic herbs to help improve any number of conditions, from chronic pain to indigestion to insomnia and more. Be aware that some Ayurvedic herbs can react negatively with certain prescription and over-the-counter supplements and medications, so it is important to consult a medical professional before beginning a regimen of Ayurvedic herbs in addition to any other medications.

Treat Endometriosis

In some women, the endometrial tissue in the uterus can overgrow its normal boundaries, resulting in a condition known as endometriosis. Endometriosis can cause severe pain, especially during menstruation. If you suffer from the pain associated with endometriosis, you might be able to lessen it using Ayurvedic principles and herbs. Practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine recommend that you consume a laxative, castor oil or senna tea on the 14th and 15th day of your cycle. A light diet is also recommended during that time. Ayurvedic principles state that this treatment is most effective in conjunction with a regular daily routine and sufficient hours of sleep; for example, your bedtime should be the same every night, and your waking hour should be the same every morning.

Improve Menstrual Irregularity and Pain

Woman can use several Ayurvedic herbs to help promote regular, less painful menstruation. Bamboo leaves may promote the start of a healthy menstrual flow and can be used to promote regularity. An herb called asafetida is known to increase progesterone, a hormone that is helps initiate the menstrual process. If your period frequently starts out light, use this herb to help start it on time and maintain more regularity. The gum of the asafetida plant can also be fried in ghee then mixed with a spoonful of honey and goat's milk. Taking this supplement for a month is said to reduce the pain of menstruation. Indian aloe and lemongrass are also used to reduce the pain of menstruation; use the latter to make a tasty and soothing tea.

Correct Cholesterol Levels

At some point in life, many otherwise-healthy women find out that their total cholesterol level has become too high. If you are one of these women, you can try Ayurvedic herbs to improve the levels in your system. Guggul is recommended, which is an herb that has been shown to prevent the liver from producing large amounts of cholesterol. This herb is widely used in India to lower high triglyceride levels, lower high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and raise low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Another herb, fenugreek, has shown similar results. The seeds of fenugreek have high fiber content, and it is thought that this fiber prevents the intestines from absorbing much of the consumed dietary cholesterol. When these herbs lower triglyceride (fat) levels in the blood, arterial health tends to improve.
