When you shave your bikini line, you may notice irritated bumps that pop up afterward. These bumps, also known as razor burn or ingrown hairs, are caused by the hair growing back into the follicle. Curly hair, common in the bikini area, is more prone to the condition. As long as the razor bumps are not infected, you can treat the condition at home. Notify your doctor if you develop pain or notice any pus around the bumps.

Step 1

Stop shaving the bikini line. Give the hair time to grow back out of the follicle. You should not attempt to remove hair again until it is at least ¼ inch in length.

Step 2

Massage the pubic area with a warm washcloth. Use circular motions as you massage along the bikini line. Repeat this process each night. This motion can help release the ingrown hair from the follicle.

Step 3

Apply a small amount of hydrocortisone cream to the bikini line. The cream reduces inflammation caused by the ingrown hair. Use the cream twice a day until the condition has improved.

Step 4

Treat with a topical acne fighting cream. Choose products that contain either 2.5 or 5 percent concentration of benzoyl peroxide. This ingredient treats present bumps and prevents future recurrences. Apply twice a day after cleaning and drying the skin.

Step 5

Use another type of hair removal method. Shaving or tweezing the bikini line will increase your chances of developing skin irritation in that area. Consider other hair removal methods, such as electrolysis, laser hair removal and depilatories, to stop ingrown hairs from appearing on a regular basis.

Things You'll Need

  • Washcloth
  • Hydrocortisone cream
  • Topical benzoyl peroxide
