Edward Bach, a physician and homeopath, invented a holistic system of healing in the 1930s. This system depended on the use of heavily diluted flower essences, which came to be called Bach flower remedies. Bach developed 38 flower remedies to relieve a variety of emotional and mental imbalances, including stress. Five of the Bach flower remedies for stress have been combined into a popular blend called Rescue Remedy.

About Bach Flower Remedies

The Bach flower remedies consist of a small amount of liquid plant or flower material within a liquid carrier. The carrier is composed of equal parts water and alcohol, which acts as a preservative. Bach created the flower remedies because he believed that a healthy body stemmed from a healthy mind. Because he sought to treat mental and emotional disturbances that, in his view, would later cause physical problems, Bach discovered a plant or flower essence that would remedy one of 38 negative states of mind.

Rescue Remedy: A Synthesis of Stress Remedies

Rescue Remedy is a quick-acting blend of five Bach flower remedies that each target stress. In addition to stress, this combination of remedies was specially developed to relieve acute anxiety and panic attacks, and is intended to be particularly useful during emergencies. Rescue Remedy contains the following five Bach flower remedies: Star of Bethlehem, Clematis, Rock Rose, Impatiens and Cherry Plum. Rescue Remedy is available in several forms: a traditional glass bottle with a dropper, a spray bottle and a skin cream.

Specific Functions of the Five Remedies in Rescue Remedy

The five remedies within Rescue Remedy have their own functions, according to Bach. Star of Bethlehem helps with trauma and consequent feelings of numbness. Clematis promotes a feeling of being grounded and prevents fainting. Rock Rose relieves feelings of panic. Impatiens assists with tension and irritability. And Cherry Plum prevents a feeling of losing control.

Forms of Rescue Remedy

All of the Bach flower remedies come in small, glass vials with droppers that dispense one drop at a time. Rescue Remedy is available in several forms. In addition to the traditional glass bottle with a dropper, it also comes in a spray, a skin cream, a skin gel, a lip balm and lozenges.

Using Rescue Remedy

To use Rescue Remedy in the traditional drop form, dilute four drops in a glass of water and sip it at intervals. To use the Rescue Remedy spray, apply two quick sprays to yourself to achieve the same effect of four drops of the diluted essence. The cream, gel and lip balm are all applied externally. Rescue Remedy pastilles are designed to be sucked on in the mouth, much as you would a throat lozenge.
