Gabapentin 300 mg, or Neurontin, is an anti-seizure medication that is prescribed to prevent seizures in epileptic patients. In addition, gabapentin can be prescribed to treat nerve pain associated with nerve compression, shingles, and diabetic neuropathy. According to Drugs.com, researchers do not understand how gabapentin works to treat nerve pain. However, researchers do understand that gabapentin increased a natural chemical, known as GABA, in the brain. Increasing this chemical reduces the excitement of the nerves in the brain to prevent seizures. A patient taking gabapentin should be aware of the possible side effects and know what to do if they occur.
Gabapentin is available in 100-, 300-, and 400-mg capsules; in 600- and 800-mg tablets; and in a liquid solution containing 250 mg per 5 mL.

Drowsiness

According to Drugs.com, drowsiness is a common side effects associated with gabapentin. This occurs because GABA can cause the central nervous system to slow down, which can result in drowsiness. A patient taking gabapentin 300 should be extremely cautious when driving or operating heavy machinery until he knows how his body reacts to taking gabapentin. He should let his doctor know if the side effects of this medication are preventing him from completing his daily activities. The doctor may adjust the dosage to prevent drowsiness.

Upset Stomach

Gabapentin 300 may also cause an upset stomach, states Drugs.com. This occurs because gabapentin may affect the nerves in the digestive tract that can lead to constipation, diarrhea or vomiting. Drugs.com further states that taking an antacid containing aluminum or magnesium within two hours of taking gabapentin can increase the risk of having an upset stomach. In this case, the patient should let his doctor know that gabapentin is causing an upset stomach.

Weakness

The Mayo Clinic states that gabapentin may cause muscular weakness or loss of strength. This occurs because GABA can also affect the nerves that cause muscle contraction. Because these nerves are more relaxed, a patient taking this medication may notice weakness when performing daily activities. The Mayo Clinic further states that this side effect commonly improves with time as the body adjust to the effects of gabapentin. However, a patient taking this medication should always let his doctor know of the side effects that are occurring.
