The number of calories burned during any exercise depends primarily on the weight of the person performing the exercise and the level of intensity of the activity. In general, a heavier person burns more calories than a lighter person does, and the more vigorous the activity, the more calories burned. The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute recommends a physical activity program that includes a combination of aerobic exercises, resistance training and flexibility exercises.

Exercises That Burn 180 to 370 Calories per Hour

The USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 includes the number of calories burned per hour for various exercises for a person weighing approximately 154 pounds. According to those statistics, stretching burns approximately 180 calories per hour, light weightlifting burns 220, walking at 3.5 mph burns 280 and bicycling at less than 10 mph burns 290. Dancing, light gardening or yard work and golfing, if you walk and carry your clubs, each burn 330 calories per hour. Hiking burns approximately 370 calories per hour.

Exercises That Burn 400 to 600 Calories per Hour

Intense weight lifting, heavy yard work and vigorous basketball each burn approximately 440 calories per hour, walking at 4.5 mph burns 460 and high impact aerobics burns 480. Bicycling faster than 10 mph and running or jogging at 5 mph burns 590 calories per hour, while swimming slow freestyle laps burns 510.

Exercises That Burn More Than 600 Calories per Hour

The Mayo Clinic compiled its list of calories burned per hour for various activities using the Compendium of Physical Activities: An Update of Activity Codes and MET Intensities, a study headed by Dr. Barbara E. Ainsworth of the University of South Carolina. According to those statistics, a person weighing approximately 160 pounds burns 657 calories per hour on a stair treadmill, 730 calories doing Taekwondo and 730 calories jumping rope. Running at 8 mph for one hour burns 986 calories, while rollerblading burns 913.
