Holy basil, known in India as tulsi and scientifically as Ocimum sanctumand, is one of the main herbs used in the traditional Indian medical practice of Ayurveda. It has a strong sweet aroma and has been used as a folk remedy for a number of ailments, including asthma and arthritis. Additionally, holy basil has the capacity of counteracting the effects of stress.
Hypoglycemia
Tulsi is known to help with hypoglycemia, or abnormally low blood sugar levels. Hypoglycemia can be caused by poor diet or excessive intake of insulin by individuals with diabetes. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, tulsi is a remedy for hypoglycemia as it tones and strengthens the body.
Make a tea with 2 tsp. of dry tulsi leaves steeped in hot water for five to 10 minutes. Drink throughout the day.
Cleansing Agent
According to the Chopra Center, in Ayurvedic medicine tulsi is used to cleanse toxins in the respiratory tract as well as relieve bloating and digestive gas, promoting lightness in the body. The leaves are rich in an essential oil that contains eugenol, camphor, nerol, and a variety of flavonoids and terpens. This makes the oil an antiseptic agent that eradicates harmful fungi, bacteria and parasites from the body.
To make and infusion of tulsi leaves, put 4 tbsp. of dry leaves in a small pot of boiling water and simmer for at least 15 minutes. It will be stronger than a tea, and can be taken throughout the day.
Insect Bites
Tulsi is considered a preventative herb against insect bites, and also cures existing bites or stings. In order to treat insect bites, crush fresh holy basil leaves to extract their juice and apply it directly onto your skin. Repeat this process until the desired relief is achieved. You can also drink a teaspoon of the juice to help your body act against the bite internally.
Stress Relief
Tulsi leaves work as adaptogens, or anti-stress agents in the body. In "The Dictionary of Modern Herbalism," physiologist Hans Selye defines adaptogens as remedies that help maintain and improve adrenal stress response in the body by balancing the adrenal cortex stress hormones that get exhausted by stress. By relieving stress, holy basil is also helps to boost your immune system.
