Tender gums that are swollen and red could be a sign of gum disease, also called periodontal disease, or gingivitis. Gum disease can be caused by a build up of plaque in your mouth, which may lead to infection, as painful, swollen gums. If you do not notice a difference in the condition of your gums after self-care measures, schedule an appointment with your dentist.

Proper Tooth Brushing

The American Dental Association (ADA) suggests brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day to keep gum disease, and the tenderness and swelling, at bay. Proper tooth brushing removes food particles from in between your teeth, which can minimize the irritation to your gums. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush rather than a firmer model can avoid further injury and bleeding to gums that are already sore.

Antiseptic Mouthwash

Rinsing daily with mouthwash may help reduce the swelling of your gums, and can take the edge off the pain as well. Commercial rinses that possess antiseptic properties can ease the tenderness of swollen, red gums, and may also minimize swelling. Some mouthwashes may be too strong and irritating; try diluting the wash with a bit of water to ease the sting. Another option is to swish an herbal mouthwash, made from 1 part arnica tincture and 10 parts water, throughout your mouth. Arnica is an herb that is associated with the treatment of swelling and bruising, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC). The herb can be toxic if consumed, so be very careful not to swallow an arnica-based mouth rinse.

Healthy Diet

Eating a healthy diet can be a home remedy for tender, red gums, especially if your symptoms are the result of a vitamin C deficiency, a condition called scurvy. The online Merck Manual explains that taking 75 to 90 mg of vitamin C daily can help reduce the risk and also treat the gingival symptoms of vitamin C deficiency, which includes not only redness and tenderness but bleeding of the gums as well. The ADA adds that an overall healthy diet with low-fat dairy products, whole grains and lean proteins is overall beneficial to people who have signs of gum disease.
