Aromatherapy is considered an integrative therapy or alternative approach to heal the body, relax or rejuvenate the mind and restore balance. While the methodology seems new-age, aromatherapy is an ancient art in tune with nature. The practice involves the use of essential oils on the body or through inhalation using candles, incense, creams, body scrubs and lotions. Depending on the practitioner, methods are often combined with relaxation techniques, music, massage, acupuncture and prayer.

Education

Credibility is as important to an aromatherapist as any other health care practitioner therefore, participation in an accredited program is strongly recommended. There are plenty of choices, but the most important element to consider would be the academic accreditation of a program. Aromatherapy is often a component to massage therapy programs or acupuncture-degree programs.
Additionally, there are stand-alone certification programs, workshops and home-study options. Aromatherapists can specialize in herbal training, blending and natural health. School directories for accredited programs can be found online at Natural Healers and the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapists.

Publications

There are several well-regarded aromatherapy journals, newsletters and publications available online and in print. Three are specifically endorsed as highly credible, well-researched, referenced and highly trusted. The International Journal of Clinical Aromatherapy is used by aromatherapists and health care practitioners who seek evidence-based research to successfully integrate clinical aromatherapy into conventional practice. Aromatherapy Today, is Australia's leading journal which is highly researched and governed by a strict editorial board. The National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy, NAHA, provides a quarterly publication with articles written by the world's leading aromatherapists.

Professional Organizations/Affiliations

Professional affiliations primarily offer credibility. However, the main advantage is the ability to network, keep up-to-date on research and industry trends. These organizations are located world-wide. Your specialty and educational credentials will drive affiliations which are specifically designed to provide insurance coverage, continuing education and benefits for providers.
Organizations such as, Atlantic Institute of Aromatherapy and the International Aromatherapy and Aromatic Medicine Association Inc. also work specifically to educate the public and increase knowledge so that practices are safe and effective.

Consumer Interest

Integrative medicine and natural healing are definitely a current trend in health care. Consumers are tired of established practices where costs and time continually increase and health issues go unresolved. As knowledge accumulates and people move away from unsuccessful, traditional approaches, new remedies and alternative methods are increasingly popular. These issues are driving the need for additional aromatherapists and health care practitioners that integrate body and mind methods into conventional medicine.
