Prostatitis refers to an infection of the prostate, a male reproductive organ that surrounds the urethra (a part of the urinary tract). The Mayo Clinic says that symptoms of prostatitis include trouble urinating, painful ejaculations, pain in the testicles or penis or frequent urination. Fortunately, drugs for prostatitis exist to decrease these symptoms.
Alfuzosin
Alfuzosin, commonly sold as Uroxatral, is a medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as alpha blockers. MedlinePlus says that this medication relaxes the muscles in the bladder and prostate gland. Some of alfuzosin's less serious side effects include a headache, constipation, nausea, a sore throat, chills and stomach pain. Some of alfuzosin's serious side effects include trouble swallowing, chest pain, fainting and swelling of the face, tongue, hands or feet. Notify a doctor when alfuzosin leads to these effects. Taking such medications as fluvoxamine, cimetidine, lopinavir and clarithromycin may require a decrease in alfuzosin's dose. This medication is a tablet taken daily.
Doxazosin
Doxazosin, commonly sold as Cardura, Cascor or Carduran, is an alpha-adrenergic blocker that specifically relaxes the muscles in the prostate gland and bladder neck so that prostatitis sufferers can urinate better. It says that doxazosin's less concerning side effects include a headache, weakness, stomach pain, diarrhea and dizziness.
Some of doxazosin's serious side effects include fast or pounding heartbeats, fainting, lightheadedness and swelling of the feet, hands or ankles. Phone a doctor when doxazosin leads to these effects. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking doxazosin because this can increase doxazosin's side effects. Doxazosin is a tablet taken daily.
Ibuprofen
Ibuprofen, commonly sold as Advil, Midol, Nuprin or Genpril, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs) that reduces such hormones as prostaglandins that lead to pain and inflammation in the body. This drug can treat the pain from prostatitis, a headache, tooth pain and menstrual cramps. Drugs.com says that some of ibuprofen's less serious side effects include blurry vision, dizziness, a headache, heartburn and diarrhea.
Some of ibuprofen's serious side effects include stomach pain, yellowing of the skin, muscle weakness, blistering of the skin and a rash. Phone a doctor when ibuprofen leads to these effects. Suffering from heart disease, kidney or liver disease, stomach ulcers, high blood pressure and nasal polyps may require a decrease in ibuprofen's dose. Ibuprofen is a tablet taken daily as needed.
