Stuffed and congested sinuses can be a part of the common cold or sinusitis due to bacteria, allergies or other infections. According to the Mayo Clinic, the treatment of sinus issues depends on the cause, but "in most cases, home remedies are all that's needed." If your symptoms are not improving within three to five days, or you have a fever or severe headache, you should contact a doctor.
Neti Pot
A neti pot is a container with a spout that rinses out the nasal cavity. You fill the neti pot with a warm, salt water rinse or nasal solution. Then place the spout in one nostril and tilt your head. Pour the solution in the nostril and let the salt water flow through the nasal cavity and out the other nostril. Then repeat on the other side.
Saline Nasal Spray
Using a saline nasal spray several times a day can rinse your nasal passages and help unblock your sinuses.
Decongestant Nasal Sprays or Drops
A decongestant spray used several times a day may help temporarily clear stuffed sinuses. However, Patient UK states that "you should not use a decongestant spray or drops for more than 5-7 days at a time. If they are used longer than this, they may cause a worse 'rebound' congestion in the nose."
