The strychnos nux vomica plant is mostly found in India. The fruit from this plant is about the size of an orange and is considered edible. Though these bitter seeds can be poisonous, they began being used for medicinal purposes in the United States in the 19th century. Nux vomica is still used as a homeopathic treatment. It can be combined in a tonic, sometimes with iron, phosphoric acid and quinine, or used in tablet or pellet form.

Treatment of Gastrointestinal Disorders

Nux vomica is used as an alternative supplement for a number of stomach problems. It can help with stomach bloating and cramping. It has been used to ease nausea and control vomiting. Dr. Edwin Homes noted in "Thereapeutics of Nux Vomica" that medicines made from the plant ease ailments such as colic, though you should not use this product on children without consulting a physician.

Easing Influenza

Studies by Dr. Paul Herscu on the 2007 and 2008 influenza seasons showed nux vomica was appropriate for these flu strands. An additional study at the Herscu Laboratory noted nux vomica was helpful with the 2009 strand and possibly the swine flu. Herscu specifically noted nux vomica to help with the fever, chills and respiratory symptoms of influenza.

Other Uses

Herscu noted the reduction of fever in some patients being given nux vomica. It is also used to help ease the pain of headache. Nux vomica can be helpful in breathing difficulties brought on by stuffy noses and coughs from colds. Other uses have been suggested. Homes also noted in his paper that nux vomica can be used as a treatment for urinary problems because it can strengthen muscular tissue.

Recovering from Overindulgence

Nux vomica is touted in many products as a hangover remedy. The plant appears to aid in recovery from too much alcohol as well as overindulgence in other substances such as caffeine. Because of its help with digestive problems, it is also considered for use after eating too much rich or fatty food.

Warning

The nux vomica plant is the main natural source strychnine, an odorless crystalline powder. Strychnine is used as a pesticide and as a poison for rats. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have listed strychnine and nux vomica as hazardous chemicals. Consult with your doctor before taking nux vomica. Dosing is very important in order to avoid complications. Seek immediate medical attention for any severe reactions, such as painful muscle spasms or difficulty breathing.
