1. Joining the Local Archery Club
Look in your local paper for an archery team listing. Contact them and arrange for a meeting. There are very few requirements for blind archers. Foot locators and a tactical aid for sighting attached to the back of the hand are used to assist blind archers. Provide them with proof of successful completion of an archery course. Blind archery is very common in Europe and is gaining ground in the United States. During practices, blind archers follow all the same rules as sighted archers. The Blind Archers Association keeps track of your score at competitive events and provides rankings. Most blind athletes compete in blind archery through the local archery club.
2. Get a Coach
Archery coaches are very knowledgeable about the specific skills required for archery. Contact a local coach and discuss your desire to compete as a blind archer. Provide a list of the blind archery rules for review. Then training can begin. All athletes need coaches to guide their skill development and provide assistance. Many professional coaches enjoy the opportunity to work with blind archers.
3. Prepare for International Competition.
To prepare for international blind archery competition, you must obtain an evaluation of your level of blindness from a certified ophthalmologist. The purpose of this certification is to ensure a level playing field for all competitors. Determine if you want a sighted guide to join you. If so, contact the organizing committee and advise them of this in advance. When traveling overseas, arrange for assistance at the airport. The whole process is much smoother if someone else is responsible for locating luggage and moving it for you. When participating in the event, listen carefully to the judges chat, which happens at the start of every day of competition. Any modifications or changes to the program are announced at this time. If further clarification is needed go and see the judges in advance. Make any adjustments necessary before the event starts.
4. Compete in Local Events
To compete in a local archery event, simply register for the event and disclose your status as a blind archer. Provide a copy of your certificate from an ophthalmologist. Make arrangements in advance to ensure the required equipment is properly installed in advance. Register with the local blind archers association. Add your scores from the local tournaments to your profile with the blind archers association. Individual and team ranking lists are provided for the local area, state and country.
