Whether you wear skateboard shoes for fashion or for functionality, you need to lace them. You can choose from numerous lacing styles, but if you're looking for an attractive and comfortable option, try straight, or bar, lacing. In straight lacing, shoelaces run horizontally from eyelet to eyelet, creating a series of parallel lines. Straight lacing relieves pressure over the top of the foot, making it an ideal choice for comfort and easy removal, according to the comprehensive Ian's Shoelace Site.

Step 1

Insert one end of the shoelace through the bottom left-hand eyelet and the other end through the bottom right-hand eyelet. Feed the lace from the outside of the shoe toward the inside, and pull until both sides of the lace are equal in length.

Step 2

Feed the length of shoelace on the left-hand side from the inside to the outside of the second eyelet from the bottom. Pull the lace taut, and insert it into the corresponding right-hand eyelet.

Step 3

Skip past the second-from-the-bottom right eyelet, and draw the right-hand length of shoelace through the third eyelet from the bottom, feeding the shoelace from the inside of the shoe to the outside. Feed the lace through the corresponding left-hand eyelet.

Step 4

Continue working in the established pattern, lacing from the inside of every other eyelet on either side and feeding the shoelace through the corresponding eyelet on the opposite side. This will create a series of tidy bars that extend over the top of the skate shoe's tongue.

Step 5

Finish lacing the shoes in the following manner when you've drawn the shoelaces through all but the top pair of eyelets. Draw the length of lace on the left-hand side of the shoe through the top left eyelet, skipping the second eyelet from the top. Pull the right-hand length of shoelace through the top right eyelet. Both shoelace ends should face toward the outside of the shoe.

Tips and Warnings

  • Bar lacing works best for shoes that have an even number of eyelet pairs. If you're lacing skateboard shoes that have an odd number of eyelet pairs, you will need to slightly adjust your approach to create an attractive pattern. Tucking in the ends is one of the easiest way to work around the odd number of eyelets. Just work in the bar lacing pattern until you've laced through all the eyelets. At this point, both ends of your shoelace will face toward the inside of the shoe. Tie the shoelace ends together, and tuck the excess under the insole of the shoe.
