Three-on-three basketball has become a popular way of conducting tournaments throughout the United States. These tournaments are normally held in the summer months at outdoor locations that attract significant crowds of fans who are enticed by some of the exciting offensive plays that the participants use. Three vs. three basketball tournaments usually award cash prizes and other awards to winners and runners up in their tournaments.
Length of Game
In many three vs. three tournaments, the length of the game is determined by the number of points scored. Typically two teams will play to 15 points and the first team that reaches 15 points will win the game, as long as they win by two points. All shots from within the three-point line are worth one point and shots taken from outside the three-point line are worth two points. A time limit may be instituted if neither team reaches 15 points with 25 minutes in the first two rounds of the three vs. three tournament. The team that is leading after 25 minutes will be declared the winner and move on to the next round. The time limit is used so all teams get a chance to play in the early rounds without delay. There is no time limit once teams get to the third round.
Number of Players
In order to play three vs. three basketball, a registered team must have at least three players. However, in many tournaments you can have five players on your roster. That means that as the game is going on, two players can sit on your bench. You can bring in one or both substitutes any time there is a stoppage in play such as a foul call or an out-of-bounds play. This is usually due to injury or ineffectiveness because players do not foul out in three vs. three basketball.
Player Fouls
In most three vs. three basketball tournaments, a player foul will not result in a free throw. If the offensive team is fouled in a non-shooting situation, the offensive team takes the ball out of bounds. If a player is fouled while shooting, his team will be awarded the basket and get possession of the ball if he made the shot from the field. If he missed the shot, his team will retain possession. In certain championship tournaments, free throws will be awarded if a team commits a high number of fouls in the game. Typically, a team must commit 10 or more personal fouls before free throws will be awarded. If the referee believes a player has attempted to injure another player with a foul, that player will be ejected from the game and the team may be disqualified, depending on the severity of the foul.
