Moles can become cancerous and must be removed for the safety of the sufferer. Some moles are present at birth while others may form throughout the years, even in adulthood. Moles can increase in size with excess sun exposure and skin damage; however, growth can be inhibited while new mole formation prevented through proper skin care and maintenance.
Step 1
Inspect your skin after sun exposure for any growths. The armpits, neckline, face and legs are ideal places to look for mole formation. Early detection means early treatment. Inspection of the skin also allows you to understand the condition of your skin and where moles have the potential of forming such as armpits, under the breasts and the upper thighs. Treating areas with increased risk of mole formation is the best prevention.
Step 2
Apply SPF 15 or higher sunscreen when going outdoors. The sun's UV rays promote excess melanin production and can promote cancer cell formation through skin damage. Sunscreen will block out a majority of these harmful rays, giving you added skin protection. Sun damage has been linked to abnormal mole formation, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. UV ray protection will reduce mole formation while stopping existent growth.
Step 3
Avoid sunlamps and tanning beds as the UV rays from these products is concentrated and higher in frequency than the sun itself. Avoiding use of these items will keep skin damage at bay preventing mole growth and formation. UV rays from these items have the same effects on the skin as sun exposure.
Step 4
Stay indoors during peak sun hours. These hours are normally from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. During these times, the sun's rays are the strongest and can penetrate the skin deeper, even with the use of sunscreen. Eliminating high concentration of UV rays during these hours will prevent stimulation of mole growth.
Step 5
Wear clothing that covers the skin and wide brimmed hats when outdoors. Skin that can be covered should be to protect from sun exposure. Long sleeves, pants, socks, and closed toed shoes are ideal for covering up the skin in the sunshine. Keeping the skin covered and protected decreases mole formation and growth by keeping UV rays and environmental toxins from penetrating the skin.
