The neti pot is a safe and reliable method for cleansing the nasal cavities. Anyone who suffers from allergies, chronic sinus problems, respiratory congestion, and frequent colds will benefit from using a neti pot. A saline-based solution is used in the neti pot and run through the nasal cavities washing away pollens, mucus, viruses and bacteria. Consumer knowledge increases efficacy and maximizes the benefits.
History
Nasal washing is an ancient Ayurvedic technique known as Jala neti. The neti pot originated in India and is "based in the yoga tradition, according to nasopure (See Reference 2)." Eastern cultures have used nasal washing for centuries considering it to be a part of basic daily hygiene. Within the United States, use of the neti pot started gaining medical exposure and consumer interest about 35 years ago. Today, the neti pot is recommended by physicians and considered a safe method of dealing with nasal and respiratory issues.
Benefits
Nasal passages are considered to be an entryway for disease and sickness. The nose protects you from infection due to the fine hairs and mucus membranes which catch and filter foreign substances. The filter can become burdened with pollen, dust, chemicals and pollution. Nasal cleansing with saline can remove infectious bacteria, viruses and dirt. Breathing is improved so nasal passages are moist and clear reducing issues with bronchitis, allergies, asthma and sinusitis.
Warnings
There are no serious risks associated with the use of a neti pot. However, using the correct amount of saline solution, water temperature and technique are important to experiencing comfort and maximizing the advantages of nasal washing. Individuals with conditions such as chronic nose bleeds, nasal polyps or a severely deviated nasal septum should consult with their health care provider before using a neti pot, according to Ayurvedic physician, Robert Svoboda.
Saline Solution
There are pre-measured packaged solutions available that simply require mixing with warm water. If you prefer to mix your own solution, sea salt is recommended or salt with no additives such as iodine or chemical agents. Mix one cup of water to 1/4 teaspoon of finely ground salt or 1/2 teaspoon of coarsely ground salt until it dissolves. Make sure the water is warm, but comfortable to the wrist, which is more sensitive to temperature than the hands.
Types of Neti Pots
Neti pots are available in several materials and sizes. The most important factor to consider is the size of the spout. It needs to fit your nasal opening. There are porcelain, ceramic, plastic and stainless steel neti pots. Cost varies and if you frequently travel, a breakable material would not be recommended (See References 4 and 5).
