Yohimbe extract, also known as yohimbe bark extract, is an herbal supplement derived from the bark of the African yohimbe tree. It contains yohimbine, a potent alkaloid that stimulates the central nervous system. Yohimbine is also said to affect mood, libido and blood pressure. Yohimbe extract is available in pills, capsules and tinctures.
Erectile Dysfunction
Often referred to as the herbal Viagra, yohimbe extract is commonly used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). The reason for this is that yohimbine hydrochloride, a prescription medication also derived from the bark of the yohimbe tree, is used for this purpose. But the efficacy of the herbal version can vary greatly, since the levels of yohimbine found in the extract aren't consistent and sometimes contain very little of the active alkaloid.
Function
The alkaloid of yohimbine can cause dilation of the blood vessels within the genitals of men, notes the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dilation allows more blood to fill the penis, which can aid in an erection. It's also believed to increase the sensation of genital tissue, helping with the manual stimulation of an erection.
Side Effects
Much like any other herbal supplement, there's the potential that yohimbe extract could cause undesirable side effects. These include nausea, vomiting, anxiety, nervousness, dizziness, insomnia and high blood pressure, cautions the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Ceasing use normally causes these adverse reactions to subside. Yohimbe bark may also trigger an allergic reaction in some people, advises the National Institutes of Health.
Interactions
The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center also warns that yohimbe bark may adversely interact with certain medications, such as antidepressants, phenothiazines, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, naloxone, buproprion and methamphetamines. When taken in conjunction with one or more of these prescriptions, it could cause hypertension, increased anxiety, heart palpitations, tremors and toxicity.
Other Functions
According to the National Institutes of Health, yohimbe extract has also been used to enhance the female libido and treat hypotension. Scientific evidence is still limited on its efficacy and safety in treating such conditions. Always consult a qualified medical professional prior to using this or any other herbal supplement.
