White kidney beans contain trace amounts of phaseolamin, a compound that has been repeatedly investigated as a possible treatment for obesity and diabetes. While no large-scale studies have conclusively demonstrated the benefits typically associated with these versatile supplements, preliminary evidence is encouraging. In general, white kidney bean extract is well-tolerated and associated with few significant side effects. However, people with medical conditions and those taking medications should consult a health care provider before using white kidney bean extract for weight loss.

Few Side Effects

Unlike many over-the-counter and prescription drugs, white kidney beans facilitate weight loss without the harmful effects of caffeine and other harsh stimulants. White kidney beans work in the digestive tract, rather than the heart or central nervous system. Most of the side effects associated with with kidney bean are mild; they include gas, sensations of fullness and indigestion.

Enzyme Inhibition

According to a 2007 clinical trial published in the journal "Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine," white kidney bean extract inhibits the production of alpha-amylase, an enzyme involved in the digestion of starch. Participants in the clinical trial experienced greater weight loss when using white kidney bean supplements than people who used diet and exercise alone.

Healthier Body Composition

In 2007, the "International Journal of Medical Science" reported that people taking white kidney bean extract experience a decrease in fat volume, but don't lose lean muscle mass. The participants in the study were slightly overweight but generally healthy; these results may need to be confirmed in people with significant obesity and other health problems.

Blood Sugar Control

White kidney bean extract may help to reduce the gylcemic index of starchy foods, thereby preventing the abrupt blood sugar fluctuations associated with diabetes and reactive hypoglycemia. Dr. Jay Udani, a leader in research regarding the benefits of white kidney bean extract, conducted a study in December 2005 to demonstrate this potential benefit. Because white kidney bean inhibits the breakdown of carbohydrates, it can reduce the glycemic load of foods such as white bread and potatoes. White kidney bean may be a viable complementary treatment for people with diabetes.
