Natural Herbal Remedies for a Sore Throat

A sore throat is the result of an inflammation of the back of the throat or the pharynx, which is the tube that connects the mouth and nasal cavity with the esophagus. It is usually the first sign of a cold, the flu or a bacterial infection, such as strep throat or mononucleosis, says mothernature.com. A sore throat can also be the first sign of tonsillitis or the mumps, or from excessive smoking or talking loudly or shouting.

Garlic

Natural-homeremedies.org says that a good recipe to try for a sore throat is to mix together four cloves of garlic, one tablespoon of honey and one eighth teaspoon of cayenne. When your throat is sore, take a spoonful of the mixture, chew it up well and swallow.

Parsley

Prepare a tea by boiling one pint of water and add two sprigs of coarsely chopped parsley, three whole spice cloves, one teaspoon of powdered myrrh and one quarter teaspoon of powdered goldenseal, all of which can be purchased at your local health food store. Stir the mixture and use as a gargle or mouthwash to alleviate the sore throat pain, says natural-homeremedies.org.

Sage leaves

Home-remedies-for-you.com says that sage leaves can be used as an effective treatment for sore throats. Add two teaspoons of sage leaves to a half liter of boiling water. When the mixture is moderately cool, add a little vinegar and honey according to your taste and then use the mix as a gargle. They also say that a teaspoon of this mixture can also be taken internally, as well.

Goldenseal

Make a tea by pouring boiling water over one to two teaspoons of dried goldenseal; steeping for ten minutes. Strain the tea to remove the herbs and allow the mixture to cool before using it as mouthwash, says mothernature.com.

Chamomile blossom

Natural-homeremedies.org suggests making a tea by combining one to two teaspoons of dried chamomile blossoms to a pint of boiling water. Drink a cup of the tea every few hours to help with a sore throat.

Turmeric

Mothernature.com suggests combining one half teaspoon of salt and one teaspoon of turmeric with a cup of hot water. When cool enough, gargle with the mixture prior to going to bed.
