Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder with symptoms of unreasonable thoughts and fears that lead to repetitive behaviors. Traditional treatments include behavioral therapy and medications, but there are alternative treatment options as well. Although alternative methods may be useful for this disorder, these methods should not replace the benefits of traditional therapies and consultation with a mental health professional.

Yoga

Yoga is a controlled series of poses aimed at bringing the mind and body in harmony with one another. Harvard Medical School indicates that yoga is a helpful alternative treatment for anxiety-based disorders such as OCD. Yoga practice can reduce the perception of stress and decrease arousal. HealthandYoga.com recommends certain poses, called asanas, for managing obsessive thoughts. The intended effect of the poses is to reduce the repeated thoughts and prevent subsequent compulsive behaviors.

Herbs

It is theorized that OCD stems from an imbalance of serotonin in the brain. Traditional medication aims to correct the imbalance with drugs, but herbal remedies can also balance this chemical. An herb called passiflora incarnata is a natural tranquilizer touted as an anxiety reducer. The University of Maryland Medical Center recognizes that passiflora incarnata is best used in combination with other herbs, such as valerian and kava, for maximum anxiety reduction. Consult your physician before using any herbal remedies, as these may have side effects when mixed with traditional medications.

Acupressure

Acupressure is an ancient healing method that involves placing pressure on certain points in the body to relieve blockages that cause disorders. Acupressure for OCD involves targeting areas of the liver, stomach and spleen to remove blocks that lead to obsessive thoughts. The benefits of regular acupressure healing include calmness, relaxation and reduced emotional upset. HolisticOnline.com recommends using acupressure for relieving the obsessive thoughts that lead to compulsive behaviors.
