3 Ways to Do Laya Yoga

1. Start at the Beginning

Attend a beginner class in Laya yoga to get started. In these classes, the instructor provides the bhramari kumbhaka or humming sound made deep in the throat. Students use this method to develop proper breath control. To create and maintain the sound, the student must exhale very slowly, carrying the sound for a long time. Only after significant practice can a student attempt Laya yoga. Before starting Laya yoga practice, free the body from all impurities through the dedicated practice of pranayama. Speak with your guru or spiritual adviser for instructions on clearing the impurities from the mind and the proper preparation for Laya yoga.

2. Practice at Home

Laya yoga is the meditation on sound. The purpose of this type of yoga is to focus the mind on the sounds within the body and increase awareness of the body. To practice Laya yoga at home, sit in siddhasana and focus your mind on the spot between your eyebrows. Allow your eyes to roll up and close your eye lids. Keep your mouth closed and breathe through your nose. The room should be silent, with no outside noises. Focus your mind on your right ear and listen for sound. The sounds vary from loud to quiet. Practice Laya yoga every day, until you hear tinkling noises, a flute sound or the buzz of bees. These sounds come from within and cannot be heard by others. Following Laya yoga practice allows the mind to focus on the internal sounds and ignore the external. Focusing inward increases mental calmness and clarity.

3. Anywhere, Anytime

Laya yoga is an internal meditation practice. Once you have begun, complete your practice anywhere and at anytime. The development of your mental concentration powers through Laya yoga is felt in all aspects of your life. The ability to block out the external sounds and focus on the internal can be applied to all the senses. Once you have mastered sound, focus the mind on any other of the five senses to deepen your powers of concentration. Focus on sight, smell, sensation and finally the internal organs to enlighten and focus the mind. Laya yoga is a lifelong pursuit and not something quickly gained. A dedicated, diligent practice brings results faster, but quality of consistent effort is the most important aspect of this yoga practice.
