Acupressure massage uses many of the principles of acunpuncture, but doesn't involve needles. The goal is to release blocked energy along the meridian paths of the body. The masseuse uses his fingers or elbow to press on specific trigger points to unblock this energy. Acupressure uses the person's own ability to heal and renew to lead to greater health. The Mayo Clinic notes that massage is part of a complete health management plan; while massage cannot alone resolve most conditions, it is frequently a complement to resolve health issues.

Know the Trigger Points

When trigger points are stimulated, your body releases endorphins that relieve pain. In addition, acupressure stimulates blood flow and oxygen availability to the trigger point area. Trigger points exist throughout your body. Find them using anatomical references, such as a bone protrusion, hollow or muscle group. You can also use a diagram from an acupressure handbook. For simple reference, remember that trigger points that lie close to a bone structure are typically in an indentation or hollow. On the other hand, you can find trigger points in a muscle by either feeling for a knot of tension in the muscle.

Manage the Pressure

Stimulate the trigger point with pressure. While acupressure shouldn't cause pain, the pressure also may not be completely comfortable. Talk with the person to whom you are giving the massage to ensure that the pressure is not to much. Conversely, if you are receiving a massage, you need to communicate with the masseuse as to what level of pressure feels comfortable.
Press directly on the trigger point using your thumb or fingers. You can stimulate larger trigger points with your elbow, but be careful of pressing too hard. If a point doesn't respond, back off, rub gently in a circular motion and press again. Press and hold for a few breaths, or until you feel the tension release.

Understand Health History

If you are giving an acupressure massage, it's critical to know if the recipient is pregnant. Some acupressure trigger points can start labor, so avoid the trigger points in the feet and ankles, in particular.
If you are receiving a massage, make sure you explain to the masseuse if you've recently been injured or have competed in any athletic events (just completed a half-marathon, for example) as this can cause tenderness in certain trigger points. If the masseuse is aware of the condition or event, she can use a lighter touch in the affected areas.
