According to PDR Health, Keflex is an antibiotic used to treat infections of the respiratory tract, the middle ear, the bones, the skin and the reproductive and urinary systems. It is important to take this medication for the entire length of time that it was prescribed. Early discontinuation of antibiotic therapy may lead to a worsening of infection. There are some side effects of Keflex that users should be aware of.

Nausea and Diarrhea

Keflex may cause gastrointestinal distress. Signs and symptoms can include nausea and diarrhea. These side effects may diminish over time as the body adjusts to Keflex. Taking this medication with food or milk can help reduce the incidence of gastrointestinal discomfort. Severe diarrhea should be reported to a physician. If left untreated, it may lead to the development of dehydration, which can be dangerous.

Dizziness, Fatigue and Joint Pain

Patient's taking Keflex may experience dizziness, fatigue and joint pain. It is important for patients to use caution while driving or doing other activities that may be dangerous until they understand how Keflex will affect them. Joint pain and discomfort may be relieved by a warm compress or massage. If joint pain becomes bothersome, ask a physician if an over-the-counter medication such as ibuprofen is safe to take for the relief of joint pain and discomfort.

Severe Reactions

Patient's may have an allergic reaction to Keflex. Keflex should not be taken by those allergic to cephalexin or to other cephalosporin antibiotics, reports Drugs.com. Signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction may include rash, hives, swelling of the tongue or throat, and difficulty breathing. An allergic reaction is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment. Additional side effects that warrant immediate medical attention include seizure, a blistering skin rash, fever, confusion, weakness, hallucinations and a decrease in urination.
