The drug generically named progestin, is marketed in the United States under a variety of brand names including Aygestin, Camila, Crinone, Errin and Jolivette. This medication is used for many purposes in both women and men, such as to treat hot flashes, to regulate menstrual cycles, to promote fertility, to prevent endometrial hyperplasia and to treat several forms of cancer such as uterine, kidney and breast cancer. Jolivette is administered as a pill.
Irregular Menstruation
Irregular menstrual periods are a known common side effect of this medication. These types of problems may include greater or lesser flow of blood during menstruation, vaginal bleeding that occurs between cycles and the cessation of menstruation. This, Drugs.com reports, is a serious common side effect of Jolivette that should be reported to a physician.
Hyperglycemia
Even if the person taking Jolivette is not a diabetic, he may find he has symptoms of hyperglycemia or high blood sugar levels. These symptoms may include abnormal thirstiness, urination frequency increases, appetite loss and a feeling of cotton mouth or dry mouth. A physician should be contacted promptly if these symptoms arise.
Pain
Jolivette also may cause some non-serious common side effects in the person taking the pill. She may, for example, feel cramps or pain in her abdomen. She may get mild headaches as well. The Mayo Clinic reports these are temporary side effects that should end within a few days of starting the medication. She should, however, talk with her doctor if the pain is severe or does not stop within a week.
Mood Changes
Drugs.com reports that this medication, which is a hormone, can cause mood changes that may be unusual. This, too, is a common side effect categorized as non-serious and temporary in most people who experience it.
Weight Gain
Jolivette also may change the balance of a person's metabolism during the initial part of treatment. This can cause weight gain that is rapid and unexpected. After the body becomes used to taking the medication, this problem should stop.
