Hair that is brittle, dry and feels like straw is damaged and is at risk for breaking. If your hair has been exposed to frequent hair coloring, perming, wind, chlorine, sun, hair products, blow drying or straightening, it may become damaged. To prevent your brittle hair from breaking, treat it carefully and use home remedies to make your hair strong and shiny.

Make a Hydrating Mask

Mix up a moisturizing hair mask to restore your hair's natural oils. Kori Ellis of sheknows.com recommends creating a hair mask with 1/4 cup plain organic yogurt, 1/4 cup mayonnaise and 1 egg white. Whip the egg white until it is frothy, and then add the mayonnaise and yogurt. Apply the mixture to wet hair, cover with a shower cap, and let it sit for 30 minutes. Rinse the hair in the shower, then wash with a mild shampoo. Whip up a new mask mixture and apply it to the hair every week, or as needed.

Don't Brush Wet Hair

Hair that is brittle and dry can break off at the crown. Brushing hair weakens it, particularly if you brush your hair with a hairbrush that has plastic bristles. Let the hair air-dry instead of blow drying it, says Los Angeles hairdresser Joanne Harris. After the hair is completely dry, carefully brush with a natural-bristle brush, like wood or boar hair, or a wide-ooth comb. Hair that is particularly dry may tangle more easily than healthy hair. Spray on a detangler if necessary to reduce hair breakage.

Trim Ends

Damaged, brittle hair may be particularly dry on the ends, says Anja Vaisanen, hair stylist at Suga Salon in New York City. Get your hair trimmed at least once every six weeks to prevent hair from becoming frayed and dry at the ends. Trimming the hair will also eliminate split ends, which can make hair tangle more easily and look messy. If you can't afford to go to a salon every six weeks, carefully trim your hair yourself using hair shears or very sharp scissors.
