1. Join an Iyengar Yoga Class
Iyengar yoga is a type of yoga that focuses on the action elements. To properly meditate in Iyengar yoga, focus completely on the postures as you complete them. Iyengar yoga is different from all other schools of yoga with the focus on technique, sequence and timing. The main principle is meditation while moving. This is very hard to do, as you must focus completely with your mind on the actions of your body while still connecting fully with your body during movement. The technique of each posture must be absolutely perfect if you want to benefit from this type of exercise of the body and mind. Iyengar yoga instructors are skilled in the use of physical aids to help students learn to hold the postures correctly. Through the use of blocks, rope, bands and wood, the exactly correct postures are learned. These postures allow students to focus completely on the meditation aspect of this school of yoga. Frequent attendance of yoga classes is critical in Iyengar yoga. There is no other way to ensure your postures are correct without properly trained instructors to guide and correct you as you learn.
2. Practice at Home
To properly meditate, much practice is required. Create a dedicated yoga space in your home. Put up a full length mirror to observe your postures. Feel every sinew of muscle tissue as you move through each posture. Complete your pranayama breathing while doing the postures. Create a small card with a complete list of all the postures and the correct sequence. These types of tools allow your mind the freedom to meditate deeply while completing the postures.
3. Attend the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI)
RIMYI is located in Prue, Maharashtra, India. This institute is dedicated to the Iyengar school of yoga. The building itself is three floors, representing the mind, body and soul. With eight columns to represent the eight limbs of Ashtanga yoga, the very architecture gives a sense of peace and purpose in all who visit. Classes for all levels of skill are held regularly. To gain the largest benefit from these classes, students should have practiced Iyengar yoga for a minimum of eight years, with the ability to hold the inverted postures for at least 10 minutes.
