Diabetes is a dangerous disease that can cause serious implications when left untreated. Knowing all the do's and don'ts of diabetes may seem daunting, however, it may save your life. You can curb your diabetes with a few lifestyle changes.

Step 1

Eat foods high in fiber and avoid starches and unrefined sugars. Fiber keeps insulin levels under control in the body, fighting off your need for future insulin injections or pills. Fresh fruits and vegetables teamed with whole grains will provide plenty of daily fiber to keep these levels consistent.

Step 2

Exercise daily by walking or doing light cardiovascular activity. This keeps insulin levels in the normal range and helps strengthen the heart as well. Exercise will also ward off diabetic complications, such as neuropathy and lowered kidney function.

Step 3

Check your blood sugar levels daily. Knowing what range your blood glucose levels are will help you control them better. Write down each reading in a diary so that you can compare your daily glucose level improvement and show these readings to your doctor during your monthly check-ups.

Step 4

Take one bitter melon supplement per day after your morning meal. Bitter melon is helpful in treating insulin-dependant diabetics in controlling blood sugar naturally in conjunction with diet and exercise. Bitter melon can be found at local health food stores.

Step 5

Write each meal in a food journal to help keep track of what causes glucose spikes and what has no effect on your glucose levels. This way you can avoid foods that cause problems by raising glucose levels.
