Make your gym experience the best it can be by taking advantage of all of the resources available. Go on a tour of the facility with a staff member and attend any free orientation offered. This will help increase your comfort level and knowledge of the facility. This is important so you can get the most our of your gym experience. You are paying for the services, and it would be silly not to utilize them.

Ask for Help

Gyms are filled with fitness professionals to help you. They can help you figure out how to work one machine or help you develop a comprehensive exercise and diet program. While personal trainers and nutritionists usually charge for their services, many gyms offer one free complimentary session. New personal trainers are also willing to offer free sessions to show off their knowledge in the hopes of gaining new clients. Take advantage of these opportunities to learn about the different machines and exercises that will help you reach your goals. Whether you have one question or 100 questions, the staff members at a gym can help you.

Take Group Fitness Classes

There are group fitness classes for every fitness goal. Many gyms offer them for free with a gym membership, while some gyms charge a monthly fee or a fee per class. Taking group fitness classes take the planning out of workouts. They are led by trained professionals, who guide you through a workout with intentions to build muscles or burn a lot of calories. Some classes, such as yoga or Pilates help to build flexibility and core strength. Taking a few classes can be effective in teaching you knew exercises that you can perform on your own.
Before you jump into a class, the American Council on Exercise suggests that you explore your options. Look for a class that fits your needs and an instructor who is able to help you adjust in class. Even though group fitness instructors are trained in exercise programming, some are better than others at making you feel welcomed. When you are new to a class, it is important to find an instructor who can assist you while teaching a full class.

Explore the Gym

Every gym is different, but most, if not all gyms have the equipment necessary to incorporate all aspects of fitness. The Mayo Clinic lists a well-rounded fitness routine as including weight, cardio, flexibility, balance and core training. To incorporate all five components, familiarize yourself with the weight machines, cardio machines and other equipment. If you are not sure how to get started, take a class to learn new exercises or speak with a personal trainer

Keep the Gym Clean

Depending on the size of a gym, hundreds of people may utilize it on a daily basis. This makes it difficult for the gym staff to keep it neat and clean. In most gyms, gym members are expected to clean up after themselves. After you use dumbbells, put them back on the rack and re-rack the weights you used on the barbells. This will help prevent injuries from people tripping over equipment or trying to clear weights that they cannot lift. Always wipe off your sweat with the sanitary spray or wipes provided. Using a disinfectant will help eliminate bacterial infections. You may also want to clean the equipment before you use it in case the person before you did not. IDEA Health and Fitness Association lists both re-racking weights and wiping equipment on the "12 Rules of Gym Etiquette." It's not just a gym fitness tip; it is good manners.
