Stretch marks, also called striae, are indented lines that obtain a reddish or purplish color. The condition is a result of the skin becoming overstretched during rapid periods of weight gain. The lines commonly appear on the abdomen, thighs, butt and breasts. During pregnancy, they may develop around the abdomen, especially if the woman gains more than the recommended amount of weight. After giving birth, you can look into removal options for stretch marks on the abdomen.

Step 1

Receive a prescription for a retinoid cream. If the stretch marks on your stomach still have a red color and are less than six weeks old, a topical retinoid can help remove the blemishes. The cream is effective at rebuilding collagen and removing cells from the skin's surface.

Step 2

Discuss microdermabrasion with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. To restore elasticity to the skin, crystals can be blown on the stretch marks and then vacuumed off the skin. This abrades off the top layer of the skin and encourages new growth.

Step 3

Undergo laser surgery for stretch marks. According to the Patient's Guide, lasers can be used to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. An excimer laser destroys the pigment found in the stretch marks to reduce their appearance and effective on older stretch marks. For older and newer stretch marks, a pulsed dye laser can be used. This type of laser focuses on the underlying layer of skin and stimulates new collagen and elastin to form. Multiple sessions of both laser therapies may be required to get rid of stretch marks on the abdomen.
