Senna leaves are an herb that act as a powerful laxative. The plant contains a chemical called anthraquinine, which causes muscle contractions in the colon and bowels. It has been used for centuries to relieve constipation. Even though senna is a natural product, it should only be used as a last resort when other constipation remedies have failed because it can have unpleasant side effects.
Gastrointestinal Discomfort
One of the most common side effects of senna leaves is abdominal pain, bloating and cramping. This side effect is possible whether you take senna orally or as a rectal suppository. Some people also become nauseated or vomit after taking senna, and relief from constipation usually comes as diarrhea. To relieve the gastrointestinal symptoms, you can take it with other herbs such as ginger, turmeric or peppermint, which help relieve abdominal distress.
Dehydration
Senna is such an effective laxative that dehydration is a possible side effect, particularly in elderly people and people who use it regularly. Chronic dehydration can lead to heart damage and loss of nutrients. When you take senna, be sure to drink a lot of water or juice to counteract dehydration.
Drug Interactions
Senna leaves and other laxatives can interfere or interact with other drugs you might be taking. For example, birth control pills might be less effective if they are purged before your body can absorb them. Senna can also have dangerous interactions with some heart drugs, diuretics and blood thinners. If you are using any other medications, talk to your doctor before using senna.
Lazy Bowel
A more serious side effect of any laxative that stimulates muscle contractions is that your colon can become dependent on the drug in order to work properly. Don't take senna leaves for more than 10 days or you will risk that side effect.
Discolored Urine
One of the stranger possible side effects of senna is urine that is pink, red or brownish. While this might be frightening, it is a harmless symptom and you don't need to call a doctor, unless more serious side effects are present.
Serious Side Effects
Another less common side effect of senna is finger-clubbing, where the area around the fingertips and nails becomes swollen. Some people also might feel tightness in their muscles or joints, especially in the jaw. Others might experience numbness, dizziness or jaundice. If you have any of these symptoms, stop taking senna leaves and consult your doctor immediately.
