1. It's the Rules
BMX is a dangerous sport and responsible riders wear the proper gear. No one can race for money or prizes without this gear. While the sport attracts a level of risk-averse athletes who tend to the extreme in all they do, the ABA works to make the sport safe and family-friendly so that everyone can enjoy the thrills without fear of cheating or interference. A rider may even be disqualified from a competition if he does not wear the proper safety gear.
2. Cover Your Head
The helmet is one of the most important pieces of equipment that you need. It must be meet or exceed regulation bicycle helmet specifications. Chinstraps are required to be tied at all times during a race or trick performance. The helmet must cover at least half of the rider's ears. If you don't use a full-face helmet, then you must wear a mouth guard.
3. Wear the Right Clothes for Protection
Long pants are a must when riding on a BMX. These pants must be made of denim or some other tear-resistant fabric. Loose pants must be tied around the ankles so they don't get caught in the chain or anywhere else. No one can ride in a regulation BMX competition while wearing shorts. No matter what the weather is like, all riders also have to wear long-sleeve shirts. Shoes must be enclosed with soft soles that can grip the BMX pedals easily. After a few falls and scrapes, you'll understand these rules and wear the right clothes even when you're riding at home.
4. Padded Protection
Falling is a given in BMX sports events, and the sponsors want to help riders avoid serious injury so they require a full set of knee and elbow pads be worn at all times. Socks must be worn too. The crossbar on the handlebars and forks on the side of the wheels has to have protective padding. Most people don't usually have padding on their bikes, so the pads can be rented at most game sites.
5. Make Your Bike Safe Too
You can do some things to make your bike as safe as possible. Both wheels should be the same size and inflated to the proper diameter, which is 22.5 inches on a 20-inch bike. Make sure that the chains and brakes, if you have them, are working properly and nothing is bent.
