Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disorder whose symptoms typically appear before the age of seven, according to the Mayo Clinic. These signs are broken down into three categories, making it easier for doctors to identify. A multitude of medications are available to treat this condition once a diagnosis is made.

Hyperactivity

Hyperactivity is the most common sign people associate with ADHD. Children who suffer from this symptom are always on the go and constantly moving. They move from one activity to the next without taking the time to complete one task, and sitting still is extremely difficult for them. In situations when being still is a must, like dinner or school time, they will still fidget in their seats.
Just as they move non-stop, they also talk constantly. This is a problem during inappropriate situations, as they often interrupt others. Another problem is running or climbing in inappropriate areas, such as in the house or classroom.

Signs of Inattention

Symptoms of inattention are often missed by both parents and teachers because children with this sign are more quiet and less likely to act out, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. While they may have the ability to pay attention when they enjoy the task, they tend to tune out those around them the minute the task becomes boring or repetitive. This often leads to skipping necessary steps in certain procedures, or moving from one task to another without fully completing the first.
Organization and concentration is also difficult for children suffering from inattention, and they often require a calm, quiet work area where distractions aren't an issue. Misplacing their homework, books and book bag is another problem, as is misplacing valuable items or toys. Following multiple instructions is a challenge, therefore it is better for the child to be given one instruction at a time; once he finishes this task, give him another.

Impulsivity

The last sign of ADHD, impulsivity may be the most dangerous, as the child acts without thinking of the consequences. She may run toward the street without a second thought of oncoming traffic, or climb a tree to its highest branch without thinking of the injuries she could obtain from falling.
During school hours children with these symptoms tend to blurt out answers in class before the teacher calls on them, or take a closer place in line during lunch or recess because of their inability to wait their turn. These actions often lead to repercussions from the teacher, or problems with other students.
When speaking, interruptions are common. Impulsive ADHD children also speak without tact. They may be forward and tell someone what they think of their clothes, hair or weight. While others may find these children to be rude, they do not understand that these children have difficulty controlling themselves.
Emotions are yet another sign of impulsivity. Some children may act out with bursts of anger and temper tantrums, while others begin to cry and appear extremely needy, as HelpGuide explains.
