Three-pitch baseball allows teams to play recreational games that move quickly. The game is popular in western areas of the United States and in Canada. In three-pitch baseball, the ball must be put into play by the third pitch, and the batter is retired if two of the pitches have been strikes. If two of the pitches are balls, the player gets first base on a walk.

Pitching

Each pitcher must use the rubber of the pitching mound to push off from as he puts the ball in play. With three pitches, a strikeout is unusual. The key is getting the ball over the plate and letting the batter put the ball in play, since the point of three-pitch baseball is fast action.

Safety Equipment

All batters in three-pitch baseball must wear helmets that cover both ears. Catchers must wear catcher's masks, a chest protector and shin guards. Batters have to leave their helmets on if they reach base. A safety base is used at first base. With a safety base, the runner goes for an orange base in foul territory while the first baseman makes the play on a white base in fair territory.

Number of Players

In thee-pitch baseball, nine players are in each team's lineup. However, teams may start all games with a minimum seven players. Each team is allowed to use a designated hitter to bat for any player in the lineup. Teams are not compelled to use designated hitters if they want all fielders to bat. If teams are short the minimum number of players to start the game, they have 10 minutes from the designated start time until they are forced to forfeit the game. Teams with two forfeits during a season might not be allowed to finish their schedules.
