The cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is unknown and it is often difficult to diagnose. The symptoms include severe fatigue, depression, muscle and joint aches, low-grade fever and an inability to concentrate. The University of Maryland Medical Center says that an immune reaction, stress or a poor diet may play a role in chronic fatigue. Presently, there is not enough clinical research to fully support the use of herbs to treat chronic fatigue, however, herbs have been used traditionally to help control symptoms. Always discuss starting an herbal regime with a qualified doctor.

Panax Ginseng

Panax ginseng contains ginsenosides. In 2009 the Ben May Department for Cancer Research at the University of Chicago studied the pharmacological functions of ginsenosides and found them to have an anti-fatigue affect. Panax ginseng may also increase your immune function, psychological functions and physical endurance. Panax ginseng has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years and is commonly used today. It is generally well tolerated with minimal side effects, which may include nausea or insomnia.

Valerian Root

Waking up and feeling exhausted even after a full night's sleep is a common symptom of chronic fatigue. Valerian root has a sedative effect and is often used to treat insomnia, stress and anxiety. In 2008, research was conducted by the Justus-Liebig-University in Germany on valerian. The study found that even a single dose of valerian extract increased the quality and quantity of sleep. Chronic fatigue not only affects you physically, but it can cause emotional instability as well. The calming action of valerian may help to reduce stress levels as well as provide a more restorative night's sleep.

Licorice

Licorice has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries. Today, there is very little scientific research proving its medicinal benefits. The American Cancer Society says that licorice extract is said to help chronic fatigue sufferers by improving adrenal function and stress, enhancing the immune system and reducing inflammation. People with high blood pressure, kidney or liver disease, or an irregular heartbeat should not take licorice root without a doctor's supervision.

Precautions

Herbal remedies should not be seen as a way to cure chronic fatigue syndrome. Many herbal remedies can interfere with or hinder the function of certain pharmaceutical medications. Working with an herbal specialist, in conjunction with your physician, can ensure optimum results.
