Researchers have found enteric-coated peppermint oil to be an effective treatment for chronic stomach discomfort--bloating, indigestion and gas--and other intestinal symptoms. Taking enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules can significantly reduce the pain and discomfort associated with stomach upset. Peppermint oil offers a natural alternative to antispasmodic medications.

Relieves Indigestion

According to researchers at the University of Maryland Medical Center, peppermint oil relaxes stomach muscles and helps bile production, two factors that work to relieve indigestion. Taking enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules with food helps the process of digestion move more quickly, preventing food from causing uncomfortable indigestion symptoms.

Eases Irritable Bowel Syndrome

A study performed by doctors at the University of Missouri at Columbia found enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules effective in reducing the symptoms caused by irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). In the study, 75 percent of children suffering from IBS who received peppermint oil capsules daily for two weeks experienced a reduction in stomach pain.
A 2005 study published in "Phytomedicine" states that enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules are as effective a treatment for IBS pain as many prescription pills that are used to relax the stomach muscles.

Reduces Gas and Bloating

Taking peppermint oil internally helps relax the smooth muscles of the intestines. During bouts of gastric distress, patients experience irregular contractions of the intestines that can lead to painful gas and bloating. Peppermint oil that has an enteric coating can travel through the esophagus and stomach, allowing the therapeutic oils to reach the intestines, where they are helpful in reducing gas and bloating.

Treats Diarrhea

Researcher Alan C. Ford claims that enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules are especially helpful in treating diarrhea. Peppermint oil reduces intestinal spasms that cause diarrhea. Ford's research found peppermint oil to be more effective in treating diarrhea than traditional fiber supplements or antispasmodic prescription medication.

Dissolve Gallstones

Many patients suffering from painful gallstones have found taking enteric-coated peppermint oil helpful in dissolving the stones. Dr. Michael Murray, a natural medicine specialist, suggests taking one or two .2 ml enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules daily to dissolve gallstones. Taking peppermint oil capsules can be a good first step for anyone suffering from gallstones who wants to avoid surgery. It's best for anyone with gallstones to discuss treatment options with a doctor before starting any home regimens.
