Home Remedies for a Runny Nose

A runny nose, or rhinorrhea, is a common symptom of a cold, flu or sinus allergies. The condition results when nasal tissues and vessels are congested with excess mucus explains the Mayo Clinic. The body naturally produces over a quart of mucus daily to aid in cleaning the respiratory tract, according to MotherNature.com. Still, additional mucus associated with a constantly dripping nose is bothersome. Home remedies may assist in alleviating nasal discharge as well as the discomfort associated with a runny nose.

Neti Pot

Use a neti pot to clean out nasal cavities. Though over-the-counter solutions are available for purchase, a homemade solution works just as well suggests Dr. James Li of the Mayo Clinic. Mix together 1/8 tsp. of salt with 8 oz. distilled or purified water. Li suggests tap water also can be used; however, first bring the water to boil and cool to room temperature before adding salt. Add the solution to the neti pot and use the pot while standing over the sink. Tilt the head back and flush the nasal cavity. The saline solution should drip out once the passageways are rinsed. If a neti pot is not available, a bulb syringe or even a small shot glass will work.

Steam

Treat a runny nose with an herbal steam bath. Add five to 10 drops of eucalyptus oil for every two cups of boiling water, suggests The University of Maryland Medical Center. Draping a towel over the head creates a tent so the moist air is trapped. Relax and inhale the moist air to clear mucus from the nose. Repeat this procedure three to four times a day. It is important to keep the face about 18 inches from the hot water to prevent burns.

Humidity

Keep the nasal passages moist and less irritated by adding moisture into the air. Sleep with a humidifier near the bed, and keep the machine turned on overnight. Clean out the humidifier weekly with water and vinegar to avoid mold and fungi buildup. Add a few drop of eucalyptus oil to the humidifier for additional relief. If a humidifier is not available, sitting in a steamy bathroom with a hot shower running also works well.
