Mercury is a toxic element found in certain types of fish, glass thermometers and batteries. There are three different types of mercury that can be poisonous to humans: elemental mercury, inorganic mercury and organic mercury. Those who are exposed to any of these types of mercury may develop one or more of the known effects of mercury poisoning.
Stomach Upset
Mercury ingestion or inhalation can lead to stomach upset symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or a burning sensation in the stomach, explains Medline Plus, a medical information website established by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health. Ingestion of high levels of mercury can lead to severe gastrointestinal damage, which can cause affected patients to excrete or vomit blood. Mercury poisoning symptoms require immediate emergency medical intervention to prevent permanent complications.
Oral Irritation
Exposure to mercury can lead to oral irritation. These known effects of mercury poisoning can include a metallic taste in the mouth, or gum inflammation or bleeding. These side effects can also contribute to stomach upset symptoms in certain patients.
Difficulty Breathing
Long-term exposure to air-borne mercury can cause significant lung irritation. As a result, affected people can develop a cough or breathing difficulties, such as shortness of breath. Prolonged exposure to mercury can cause permanent lung damage, which may lead to respiratory failure or death, warns Medline Plus.
Neurological Complications
Significant neurological complications can develop as an effect of mercury poisoning, warn health professionals with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Inhaling or ingesting high levels of mercury can lead to poisoning effects that include skin numbness or tingling, involuntary body tremors or seizures, vision alterations or memory problems. Some people may develop severe difficulty walking due to muscle weakness. Speech or hearing difficulties can also arise. Depending on the duration of mercury exposure, these neurological effects can be permanent. Neurological complications may also occur in conjunction with organ failure, which can be fatal. Exposure to any type of mercury should be immediately reported to a doctor to ensure that appropriate treatment is received.
