Jolessa (levonorgestrel/ethinyl estradiol) is a prescription oral contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy in women. This medication works by preventing the ovaries from producing eggs. Discuss Jolessa side effects with a gynecologist before beginning treatment with this method of birth control.

Breast Swelling or Discomfort

During treatment with Jolessa, women can experience unusual breast tissue changes as a side effect of this birth control method, explains Drugs.com, a peer-reviewed drug information website for consumers. Swelling or enlargement of the breast tissue can lead to sensations of fullness, tenderness, or discomfort in certain women. Though these side effects are typically temporary, but they may persist throughout the first few months of treatment.

Stomach Upset or Appetite Changes

After taking a dose of Jolessa, women can experience upset stomach symptoms. These stomach-related side effects are typically mild and can include nausea, bloating, or abdominal cramping. Eating a small snack or meal before taking a dose of this oral contraceptive can help limit the occurrence of these side effects in certain women. Stomach upset side effects can also lead to appetite or weight changes in certain women. Women who vomit during Jolessa treatment should use a backup method of birth control and see a doctor to ensure that an unintended pregnancy does not occur.

Irregular Vaginal Bleeding

Jolessa can cause irregular vaginal bleeding in certain women as a side effect of treatment, explains Daily Med, a drug information website supported by the National Institutes of Health. Spotting or bleeding between menstrual cycles is common, and typically stops during the first few months of Jolessa use. Women who develop significant vaginal bleeding, or stop having menstrual periods while taking Jolessa should contact a doctor immediately for further evaluation and care.

Hair Loss

Certain women can experience mild to moderate hair loss as a side effect of Jolessa treatment, warns Drugs.com. Affected women may notice the development of thin, sparse patches of hair across the scalp. These side effects are temporary and subside if Jolessa use is discontinued.

Headache or Dizziness

Side effects of headache or dizziness can occur following treatment with this oral contraceptive. Painful headache symptoms can be uncomfortable for some women, and may lead to decreased concentration while at work or school. Episodes of dizziness can cause affected women to appear unstable while standing or walking, but typically subside within a few minutes of onset.

Mood or Behavioral Changes

Women taking Jolessa can experience unusual mood or behavioral changes as side effects of treatment. These changes can include nervousness, confusion, depression, and/or irritability, and should be discussed with a doctor if they occur.

Acne

Treatment with Jolessa can cause acne on the face or body. This side effect may progressively subside with recurrent use of this form of birth control. Talk with a doctor if acne symptoms worsen or become bothersome.
