Coed softball is a recreational game played throughout the country. While the game is enjoyable, it can also get quite competitive. As a result, it's in everybody's best interests to know the rules of the game. Those rules include the number of women who must play in a game and the number of players allowed on the field

Makeup of the Team

In coed softball, a team can put 10 players on the field to play defense. The extra player is usually an outfielder but the only requirement is that the player must be stationed in fair territory. Of those 10 players, four must be women. On offense, the team can have anywhere from 10 to 12 hitters. If a team uses 12 batters, at least five of the batters must be female.

Pitching

In coed softball, each batter comes to the plate with a 1-1 count. As a result, if the player gets strikes on the next two pitches, he is out. If he gets three additional balls before it is put into play in fair territory, the batter receives a walk. The pitch must have an arc of 6 to 12 feet on it to be legal. If the pitcher throws an illegal pitch, the umpire immediately calls "illegal." If the batter swings and puts it into play, the result of the play stands. If he lets it go, it is a ball.

Length of Game and Conditions

Coed softball games are seven innings. The game shall have a time limit of 55 minutes. The winning team gets two points in the standings, the losing teams get no points and a tie game gets one point for each team. If a team is a head by 15 runs or more after five innings, the game is over. If the team is ahead by 10 runs after six innings, the game is over.
