Since you often see yourself in the mirror at least several times per day, you most likely won't notice if your hairline is receding. Pattern baldness occurs in many people, especially men, but often goes unnoticed for months and sometimes years. Noticing your receding hairline as soon as possible can help you fix it and prevent it from getting worse.

Step 1

Look in the mirror and examine your head. Check for age spots on your head. According to Mayo Clinic, men who experience pattern baldness often see hair loss around the temple and crown.

Step 2

Look for large clumps of hair collecting near the drain in the bathtub or shower. When you develop pattern baldness, your hair loss rate increases drastically.

Step 3

Examine your brushes or anything else that goes through your hair on a regular basis to see if more hair than usual is piling up in the bristles. Clean the hair from the items regularly and measure how much hair on average accumulates.

Step 4

Talk to your friends and family. People who see you often may not notice if your hairline is receding, but if you speak with those that only see you now and then, they may see a difference in your hair.

Step 5

Speak with your hairstylist or barber. Whoever works on your hair most often will notice a change in the pattern of your hair.

Step 6

Visit your dermatologist. Dermatologists can compare your current hairline with your medical records and look for chronic hair loss.
