Cystitis is a medical term that refers to inflammation or infection of the bladder. Merck Manuals points out that women are more likely than men to develop this condition. Cystitis is most often caused by bacteria that has entered the bladder area. It may have begun as a urinary tract infection, or UTI, affecting other parts of the urinary system, such as the urethra.

Urge

Cystitis can cause a man to feel an urgent need to urinate. The urge may cause urine to leak, called urge incontinence, according to Merck Manuals. An urge to urinate may wake a man from sleep. Cystitis can cause more frequent urination as well.

Urination Symptoms

While urinating, a man may feel a burning sensation at the tip of the penis. The urine is likely to be cloudy and sometimes darker than usual. In about 30 percent of people, blood may be visible in the urine, according to Merck Manuals. Urine may smell strongly or have a foul odor.

Other Pain

Men may develop pain in the area above the pubic bone or in the lower back. This may be more noticeable when he feels the urge to urinate and while he is eliminating, according to FamilyDoctor.org. The pain may also include the scrotum, penis or the area between the scrotum and the anus.
