Practitioners of reflexology believe there are pressure points in the hands, feet and ears that correspond to all parts of the body, and that pressing on these points produces body-cleansing effects. For instance, the feet have pressure points that correspond to the bladder, colon and kidneys, among other organs. A reflexologist can massage these points for you, or you can buy a reflexology foot mat to get a similar effect. Reflexology mats are bumpy like a cobblestone road, and using them is pretty simple.

Step 1

Lay your foot mat on a smooth section of floor near a wall or railing. If your mat is not made from a nonslip fabric, you might want to lay it on carpeting instead.

Step 2

Familiarize yourself with the reflexology pressure points of the foot to get an idea of where to apply pressure with the mat. You can find a helpful diagram through the first Reference link.

Step 3

Step onto the reflexology mat barefoot or wearing socks. The mat is bumpy, so you might need to brace yourself on the wall or railing.

Step 4

Step around on the mat until you find bumps that stimulate your pressure points. As you step, place the balls of your feet down first. Walking heel to toe may cause pain or soreness.

Step 5

Release the wall or railing when you find a good spot on the mat. This will allow your full weight to press on the spot. If your pressure points are too sensitive for your full weight, simply lean on the wall or railing once again.

Step 6

Drink plenty of water when you have finished walking the mat. Reflexologists believe that stimulating the pressure points releases toxins from your organs. Drinking water will cleanse your body of the toxins.
