Brakes are crucial parts of any bicycle, but in time the cables will stretch, and the brakes will require adjustments. The slightest problem with brakes can put you at risk of serious injuries. Being able to adjust your bicycle brakes can improve their efficiency while you are riding and prevent you from getting hurt.
Step 1
Determine what is causing your bicycle brakes to not work to their fullest potential. Possibilities include a loose cable, worn pads or a damaged rim.
Step 2
Adjust the tension of the cable. There is a barrel adjuster on the brake lever. It varies by make and model, so determine which directions to turn the barrel for tightening and loosening the tension.
Step 3
Move the brake pads. When your brake pads wear, they will slowly move under the rim. You will have to raise them back up and, sometimes, file them down until they become smooth. You can adjust the fit with an Allen wrench.
Step 4
Center the brakes. Adjust the tension of the spring that is on a small screw on the brake. Loosening the center bolt can help you adjust the spring tension. Tighten the bolt when you are finished.
Step 5
Adjust the toe-in on the brake pad. The front of the pad must be touching the rim before the back of the pad does. This will ensure that the pad does not squeal.
