1. When You Suspect Trauma to the Breast
When you have injured your breast in an accident, you should go to the emergency room immediately for an x-ray to look for additional possible injuries such as broken ribs, punctured lungs or damage to the other organs such as the heart, esophagus, stomach or liver. It is very important that you treat trauma to the breast immediately after it happens.
2. Follow the Doctor's Instructions
Once the doctor has determined the extent of the breast trauma, he will give you a list of specific instructions such as bed rest, medications and exercises. You should follow these directions completely. If you have any questions about the doctor's instructions, you should not hesitate to call him. If you have to wear bandages or splints, then you should wear them as directed. Change the bandage often and do not get any open wounds wet.
3. Finish Your Medications
If the doctor gave you a prescription to treat the breast trauma, then you should complete all of the medications. Even if you begin to feel better, take the prescription until it is all gone. Many medications will prevent and stop infections from attacking the area of trauma or will assist you with pain management and healing.
4. Follow up With Your Doctor
During the course of the breast trauma treatment, you should follow up with your doctor. Let her know of your progress and how you are doing. Make sure you keep all of your scheduled appointments and call your doctor if you condition worsens or does not heal properly. Keep your doctor informed so that she can choose the best course of treatment for your trauma.
5. A Healthy Lifestyle
Continue to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly as tolerated. It is important that you continue to take care of yourself during your treatment. A healthy lifestyle will speed up your healing process and help you feel better overall during your treatment. Ask your doctor about appropriate types of exercises that you can do during your healing and treatment time.
