4 Ways to Wrap a Weak Wrist for Sports

1. Wrap Your Wrist for Extra Support

Athletes may need extra support for the wrists while playing sports or working out with weights. Weakened wrist muscles can provide substantial strength with the aid of a wrap. You can use a wrist wrap designed for either the left or right wrist with a hole in the wider end for your thumb. Place your thumb through the hole and bring the wider part of the wrap around the back of your hand. The narrower end has Velcro on it and attaches to itself after you wrap it tightly around your wrist. You should ensure the wrap is tight but allows for proper circulation.

2. Wear Glove Supports

Wrist wraps come in a glove form that have an extension that covers the wrist for added support. You wear these wraps just like a glove, and wrap the Velcro-covered extension of the bottom end of the glove around the wrist and attach the Velcro strap to itself after wrapping it tightly around the wrist. The wrap should offer restricted mobility but not complete immobilization of the wrist.

3. Choose From Different Wrist Straps

You can gain more support for your wrists while playing your favorite sport by wrapping your wrist with a straight strap that has Velcro on both sides. You can hold the strap against your wrist with the opposite hand and bring the strap around your wrist to attach it to itself. Cinch the wrap down tightly around your wrist to offer the most support short of cutting off your circulation. You can also use straps with a loop that fits around the thumb to make fastening easier. You slip the loop around your thumb to hold the strap in place while you bring the end around your wrist. You can remove the thumb strap after you fit the wrap around your wrist so your grip remains effective.

4. Tape Your Wrist During Workouts

You can use athletic tape two inches wide to increase support of a weakened wrist. Splay your fingers wide to start and place a strip of tape around the wrist. Continue with the strip around the hand and back around the wrist. Tape a single strip on the palm side of the hand from the top of the palm down through the wrist. Use another strip from just under the index finger down toward the wrist at an angle toward the side opposite the thumb, securing the tape at the same level as the first palm strip. The next strip should run from just under the little finger to the wrist just below the thumb. Cover these support strips by continuously wrapping around the wrist, over the hand and back around the wrist just like the first taping. You should keep the fingers spread throughout the taping to provide adequate circulation in the hand
