The Mayo Clinic indicates that beta blockers are medications useful in treating high blood pressure. They act on the naturally produced chemical adrenaline by blocking its effects, thus decreasing heart rate and lowering blood pressure. Beta blockers are helpful in improving blood flow to the body by opening the blood vessels. Beta blockers may also be used for people in mild to moderate heart failure in conjunction with other medications.

Metoprolol

Metoprolol is a beta blocker marketed by the brand name of Lopressor or Toprol XL. The National Library of Medicine indicates that this medication is used primarily to treat high blood pressure. Metoprolol is also used for preventing chest pains and in combination with other medications to treat heart failure. Side effects may include stomach pain, nausea and depression. This medication is not prescribed without physician recommendation.

Atenolol

Atenolol is marketed under the brand Tenormin for blood pressure treatment. Tenormin has an off-label use as well in treating alcohol withdrawal, migraine headaches and anxiety. Tenormin is recommended to be taken regularly for maximum results in treating high blood pressure. The National Library of Medicine indicates that side effects might include drowsiness, nausea and depression.

Labetalol

Labetalol is marketed under the brand Normodyne and Trandate. This medication is prescribed for blood pressure and is recommended to be taken even if mild side effects occur. The National Library of Medicine lists side effects such as lightheadedness, headache and upset stomach.

Additional Beta Blockers

The American Heart Association indicates that the beta blockers often decrease the amount of oxygen that circulates through the body and cautions that users of this type of medication should avoid strenuous physical activity. Additional brand name beta blockers include Corea, Zebeta, Inderal and Kerlone.
