Sinus infection, also known as sinusitis, occurs when the sinus membranes become irritated and swell. The swollen passages trap air and mucus secretions, which leads to the accumulation of bacteria and eventually, infection. Sinusitis may last for several weeks, but if more than eight weeks pass, the condition is known as chronic sinusitis. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, more than 30 million people in the United States develop sinus infections each year. While over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs exist, individuals searching for alternative herbal remedies also have several options.

Step 1

Take 250 to 300 milligrams of bromelain, an enzyme derived from pineapples, three times per day between meals to help combat sinus infection and relieve nasal congestion. A systematic review published in the October 2006 edition of the Archives of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery concluded bromelain may be an effective treatment for chronic rhinosinusitis.

Step 2

Inhale eucalyptus essential oil to help relieve nasal congestion caused by sinus infection, as suggested by Phyllis A. Balch in her book "Prescription for Herbal Healing." Add a few drops of the oil to a clean tissue and inhale deeply as needed. Eucalyptus also has strong antibacterial properties that make it effective against infections.

Step 3

Steam your sinus cavities to combat sinus infection. The Mayo Clinic recommends a hot steam to ease pain and encourage mucus to drain. Fill a bowl with boiling water, drape a towel over your head and lean over the bowl, inhaling the steam as long as possible. For added benefit, add 5 to 10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil to the water.

Step 4

Drink 1 cup of anise tea, horehound tea or wild thyme tea two to four times per day to help break up congestion caused by sinus infection. Prepare the tea by steeping a single tea bag in 1 cup of hot water for 10 to 15 minutes, straining and drinking immediately. Sweeten with honey, if desired.

Step 5

Take herbal immune boosters to help your body fight off sinus infections. In his book "Sinusitis Relief," Harvey Plasse recommends taking echinacea or goldenseal supplements. For the best results, take 300 milligrams of standardized echinacea capsules up to three times per day or 250 milligrams goldenseal capsules up to three times per day. Do not take these supplements for more than 10 days at a time.

Tips and Warnings

  • Adding more pineapple to your diet may help with sinus infections, as the fruit contains high levels of bromelain. Purchase herbal tea bags in natural health stores, drugstores or some well-stocked supermarkets.
  • Always consult a qualified physician before self-treating with any herbal remedy, particularly if you are currently taking prescription medications. If symptoms don't improve within 10 days of taking herbal remedies, see your doctor immediately.
